Before I Forget
When it was clear that her life was drawing to a close, and with her sight and hearing already failing, my mother, Marietta, decided to write down her memories of her long life.
It is a fascinating document recounting a childhood spent in Somerset, schooldays in Wells Cathedral, a potential career as a talented artist cut short by the war. And it was the war that brought her to meet my father.
Then, after the war, family life in London and visits to Italy, Germany, Egypt - and even back to Wells Cathedral.
It is a gentle book, written with great love. I managed to get some copies printed as a Christmas present for her in her final year. She could no longer see the book, but she was able to feel it, and give copies to all her friends.
Now I plan to put it up on Kindle (for free) so that anyone who might be interested can read it.
